In about 1900 a centuries old Buddha was being transferred to a new temple. On the way, it was dropped and a bit of the ceramic was broken. Underneath the broken plaster shined gold. The Golden Buddha was found! Yesterday, Craig and I discovered it for ourselves and were transfixed with its kind face, caring gaze and impressive brilliance. We investigated the museums and discovered that sometime between the time the Golden Buddha was created and when the plaster was broken, because it was made of gold, Thai monks worried for it's safety from Burmese invaders. They disguised it in plaster and so it stayed hidden for nearly 500 years.
From there, Craig and I walked around China Town, had some super delicious street food and loved having a day together.
Meanwhile, Vince and the kids stayed at the hotel, swam in the pool and investigated the streets of this neighborhood while eating fresh mangosteen. Falcom is convinced everyone is looking at him like he is a Thai kid following our family around looking for handouts. Very funny Falcom! Tonight we stay in the Silom area of Bangkok and tomorrow we head off to Sri Lanka.
